India is a land of diverse and multiple festivities and cultures. Here, multiple Gods are worshipped, and various festivals are celebrated. One such festival is Makar Sankranti, celebrated for the Sun God. The God Sun is known as the direct God in Hinduism, and it transmits light and energy to the whole world. The Sun God is called the Lord of Nine Planets, and the whole world is governed by it. It is believed that the Sun changes its Zodiac every month, and this zodiac change is called Sankranti. So, there are twelve Sankranti tithis in the year, but when Sun comes in the Capricorn, it is called the Makar Sankranti. It is one of the primary and important Sankranti Tithis. Makar Sankranti is celebrated every year on 14th January, and this year also, it will be celebrated on 14th January 2022, Friday. It falls on the date of Dwadashi of Shukla Paksha during Paush month. This festival is known by different names in different regions, such as Uttarayan in Gujarat, in Kerala, it is celebrated as Pongal, and in Uttara Khand, it is called Uttarayani. In Bengal, it is celebrated as Poush Sankranti, and marks the day for the harvest festival. Devotees celebrate festivities and prepare multiple desserts like, Pathisapta, Pithe, etc. with palm jaggery (khejurer gur), coconut milk, and rice. At some places, it is also celebrated as the Festival of Khichdi. The Shubh Muhurta for Makar Sankranti Punya Kaal, is between 2:43 PM and 5:45 PM. And, the Shubha Muhurta for Makar Sankranti Maha Punya Kaal, is between 2:43 PM and 4:28 PM. It is believed that winters start decreasing from this festival, and days will get longer and nights shorter. It leads to the beginning of the departure of Autumn and the beginning of the Spring season. Considering the Mythology, on this day, the Lord Ashutosh provided the gift of Enlightenment to the Lord Vishnu. And, if we consider the Mahabharat legend, Bhishma Pitamah left his body on this day.
