Pitru Paksha Shradh, called Shradh, is a period when people remember their ancestors. This period begins after Lord Ganesha Visarjan or Anant Chaturdashi. All the devotees bid farewell to Lord Ganpati with the feeling, emotion, and promise of coming him back.
During the period of Shradh, the rituals are performed for all those who are not in this world. It is believed that worshipping the ancestors during this period helps in pleasing the Gods. Though the death of a loved one causes significant pain, it is believed that the body dies and the soul has its existence. Thus, the people offer water and Satwik food to their forefathers and perform pujas, dans, and many other rituals.
When is Pitru Paksha Shradh 2023?
This year, this period will start on 30th September 2023 Saturday and will end on 14th October 2023, Saturday. The Shradh Purnima is on 29th September 2023. 14th October, 2023 is the Sarva Pitri Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya. It is a very important day for those who are not aware of the Tithi; then the offerings can be made on this last day.
Pitru Paksha Shradh 2023 – Rituals, Traditions and Significance
The rituals may be different from person to person and region to region. However, generally, it is divided into three segments. The first part is known as Pind Daan, which includes the offering of Pind to ancestors. Then, there is Tarpan, which consists of the offering of water mixed with Black Sesame, Barley, and Kusha to the forefathers. The third part is offering Satwik food and clothes to the Brahmins and needy individuals. The people should also read the Hindu Sacred Scriptures such as “Garuda Purana.” It is believed that the ancestors, in turn, the Gods, get pleased and shower their blessings.

It is also believed that one should not wash clothes, shave the beard, cut hairs and nails, and not use soap and shampoo. One should also have Satwik Food and avoid onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food.
